DIALECTIC STEELMAN METHOD

Tournament Centre

Debate as disciplined inquiry: strengthen opposing arguments, test evidence and develop constructive proposals rather than pursue victory at any cost.

THE PRINCIPLE

The strongest version of the other side

The Steelman Method requires participants to represent a competing position accurately and charitably before criticising it. This changes the incentives of debate: listening, intellectual honesty, research and practical judgment become as important as rhetorical performance.

The Tournament Centre is being developed as a framework for structured school and university dialogues, policy debates and inter-institutional learning. Specific events and rules will be published only when confirmed.

PROPOSED STANDARD FORMAT

A structured conversation with time to think

The following elements describe a programme model, not a currently scheduled tournament.

Preparation & Pre-Thesis

Teams research the motion and may submit a preliminary position paper approximately one week before the session.

Moderation & Fact-Checking

Moderators challenge assumptions and support fair engagement. A planned ten-minute fact-checking interval allows participants to review evidence.

Dialogue & Audience Participation

A session may include opening inquiry, competing cases, Steelman exchanges, audience questions and expert commentary where available.

ADJUDICATION

Rewarding substance and participation

The indicative scoring model should be reviewed and published in each event’s final rules.

Judges — 60%

Assess evidence, reasoning, accuracy, fair representation of opposing arguments and constructive contribution.

Participants — 20%

Peer assessment encourages listening, integrity, respectful engagement and substantive dialogue.

Audience — 20%

Audience input recognises clarity, engagement and the capacity to inform public judgment.

FROM DEBATE TO POLICY

A proposal should survive the conversation

The envisaged format can use a ninety-minute main session, rotating school roles and a post-debate period for participants to develop a policy or enterprise proposal, potentially due within one month. Minority reports and dissenting conclusions can be preserved rather than erased.

The purpose is to create a pathway from public reasoning to usable proposals. Formal adoption, external endorsements or implementation cannot be assumed.

The Institute can discuss the method with schools, facilitators, researchers and prospective institutional partners. Dates, adjudicators and participating institutions are confirmed separately.
